Ras el Hanout has a reputation of being the very pinnacle of all spice blends. The name Ras el Hanout, loosely translated, means “head of the shop” and is meant to represent the very best the spice merchant has to offer. What makes this blend so special is the number of ingredients, sometimes over twenty, and the subtle manner in which all these unique spices merge to form a balanced, full-bodied blend with no sharp edges. Ras el hanout is subtly curry-like with a spicy yet floral fragrance and robust yet subtle flavor. When sprinkled onto chicken and fish before pan-frying, grilling, or baking it gives a golden color and mild, aromatic spiciness that is very agreeable. Ras el hanout goes well with lamb, game, tagines, and couscous dishes.

I am guilty of putting this on chicken, beef, pork, lamb, mixing into pilaf, etc. it's the best Ras el Hanout I've had yet; the blends I have tried so far have way too much cumin, which overwhelms the rest of the spices. this one is amazing. try mixing into ground beef for some awesome "Moroccan" burgers! My partner is vrai marocain and he said the aroma was accurate (surprised to find out one of the owners is also Moroccan! So we trust the product even more, but I didn't know this at the time of purchase). Ras el Hanout is pretty hard to find in the States; the other version I've tried that's sold in organic stores had the ratios all wrong (too much cinnamon) and even had lavender in it (what is up with U.S.-version spice blends having lavender in them? Arrête svp).

The color is very vibrant in comparison, and the aroma is stronger/fresher as well. I purchased by the weight, so very reasonable price for the amount! I also just moved from Chicago, and was sad to leave The Spice House behind, but am now super excited to have found a local, high quality spice distributor in the area! (Posted on 1/8/2016)
